As Matthew Schaefer’s rookie season in the NHL progresses, his stock continues to rise. Schaefer has made breaking records a regular occurrence in his rookie season. After making his debut on October 9, 2025, Schaefer would score his 1st NHL Goal on October 11th, becoming the 2nd youngest defenseman in NHL history to do so (18 years, 36 days). Schaefer would record a point in his first 6 career games, also becoming the second youngest defenseman in NHL history to do so. On November 2nd, Schaefer would record his first multi-goal game, becoming the second youngest defenseman in NHL history to record a multi-goal game. Schaefer would score an overtime game winning goal on November 14th against the Utah Mammoth making him the youngest NHL player to ever do so. With so many records being broken Schaefer has become the runaway favorite for the Calder Trophy while also drawing comparisons to the game’s great Bobby Orr.
